MCP protocol for data commons from Google

Just saw this on tech crunch

Anyone have a perspective on this? Good, bad? There’s python packages referenced for testing. I’m especially curious Dave Thomas and @alexbourlier … does this feel useful or better than other options, and is it something our community should evaluate?

Hi @gbathree
Always making useful contributions!
I didn’t know about it

I’ve not used it then, but my understanding of what it does is great!
It’s basically Google partnering up with trustworthy initiative to build a Data Space and making “accurate data” (if you trust these sources) available to your AI model

I’d say it’s hard not to like it
These are the sources on Ag

Without throwing a few queries at it, hard to evaluate how relevant this can be to us
I tried to use the search bar but it has proven to be unhelpful
All my queries resulted in “Sorry, could not complete your request. No place found in the query.”

Yeah, I played with it a bit and was… underwhelmed.

I tried this prompt:

”I’d like to see a line chart with time on the X axis, and number of farmers or sales value on the Y, where each line is a crop or crop sector for New York State, USA”

didn’t give it to me, but gave me other stuff. Basically, it has some canned data and simple graphs at this point. It’s a bit of a glorified search tool really.

When it can do meaningful assembly of data in a useful way, then I’ll be impressed.
